    Ukraine Civic Education Project
    All-Ukrainian scientific-practical conference on civic education via extra-curricular activities
    “CIVIC EDUCATION IN ACTION. YOUTH - SCHOOL - COMMUNITY”
    3 February, House of Teachers, Kyiv
    An all-Ukrainian conference on civic education through extra-curricular activities ‘Civic Education in Action: Youth-School-Community’ will be held on 3 February 2006 in Kyiv. The conference was organized by the All-Ukrainian Association of Teachers of History and Social Sciences “Nova Doba” within the framework of the Ukraine Civic Education Project, implemented by Cambridge Education with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The conference will bring together up to 150 teachers from secondary schools, In-service Teacher Training Institutions, teachers and students of pedagogical universities of Ukraine and representatives of Cambridge Education’s consortium partners from Germany (Deutsch Russisch Austausch) and Poland (Center for Citizenship Education), and the Educational Center “Post” (Belarus) .
    The main aims of the conference are to discuss a systematic approach to the organization of civic education in schools, to discuss and celebrate existing good practice in extra-curricular activities in EU countries and Ukraine. The conference will focus on the main areas proposed for extra-curricular activities within the project: “Youth REMEMBERS” (protection of historical heritage), “Youth HELPS” (volunteering, social work), “Youth PROTECTS” (childrens’ rights, main human rights), “Youth CARES” (environmental protection), “Youth SELF-GOVERNS” (school self-governance), “Youth CHOOSES” (participation in school elections), “Youth INFORMS” (school publications), “Youth and HEALTHY LIFE STYLE” (prevention of smoking, drinking alcohol, drugs), and “Youth DISCOVERS” (European and Ukrainian studies).
    The conference will provide an opportunity for dialogue between the Ministry of Education and Sciences of Ukraine, pedagogical universities, regional educational administrations, NGOs, teachers and the media about the democratic up-bringing of students through extra-curricular activities.
