Children's Rights in Goa (CRG) called for better security systems in all schools after the alleged rape of a seven-year-old girl in the school toilet on Monday evoked outrage in the state.

January 17, 2013.

Expressing its anguish at the shocking incident, director of the NGO, Nishtha Desai said that this is a matter of grave concern, as there has been a rise in the number of offences committed against children.

"The school is a place where parents send their children with the expectation that the bodies and minds of their children will be nurtured and cared for. However, it is unfortunate that incidents of sexual abuse are happening in schools and in a few cases even teachers have been the offenders. Can we look at the school as a safe place for our children", she added. Desai also said that the heads and the teachers in all schools need to ensure that children are protected at all times. There is a need for proper security arrangements for all schools.

"The identity of the visitors entering into school premises needs to be checked. Any one seen on the school premises must be asked who has permitted them to enter the school", Desai suggests that every school should adopt a child protection policy making a commitment that they will not tolerate any acts or deeds detrimental to the interests of children.
