On July 5 there will be a press-conference held dedicated to the installation of new equipment at the Central State Laboratory of Veterinary Medicine (CSLVM) which has received international accreditation.

    *** The Minister of Agrarian Policy Oleksandr Baranivsky, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission in Ukraine Ambassador Ian Boag, representatives from the European Commission, State department of veterinary medicine and the Ministry of Agrarian Policy will take part in the press-conference.
    The equipment to define quality of the products of animal origin has been purchased within the scope of the EU project “Establishment of an Agricultural Standards Certification and Control Mechanism in Line with WTO-SPS Requirements”. Its c! ost is a round half a million Euros. As a result of the conducted work the laboratory received a gas chromatographer, liquid chromatographer-mass spectrometer, liquid chromatographer with mass detector, atomic-absorption spectrophotometer with a set of auxiliary equipment. In June the equipment was installed and validated.
    In 2004 with the help of the WTO-SPS project he CSLVM was internationally accredited in line with the ISO 17025. On December 6, 2004 the laboratory received an accreditation certificate for 32 quality and safety parameters, including toxic elements, pesticides, mycotoxines, vitamins, histamine, chloramphenicol and caesium. Thanks to the conducted work the test results of the CSLVM can be now recognized abroad. The scope of accreditation was extended in May this year by 18 parameters in line with ISO 17025, namely for physical and chemical, microbiological indexes and antibiotics, including sulfanilamide, streptomycin and nitrofuran. In the middle of June it is expected to receive the certificate on the widened scope of accreditation from the German accreditation body.

    The project “Establishment of an Agricultural Standards Certification and Control Mechanism in Line with WTO-SPS Requirements” started in November 2003 aims at supporting the economic development of the agricultural sector through the implementation of international standards in food safety, animal and plant health in line with the World Trade Organization and Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures. Project goals are to contribute to the harmonisation of national standards in line with the WTO-SPS requirements by means of using international standards, improving the scientific experience of Ukrainian specialists though dissemination of needed knowledge and skills, familiarization of specialists! with th e main requirements of the WTO-SPS Agreement.
    The project is funded by the European Union and implemented by GFA Terra Systems/TUV Nord consortium. The beneficiary of the project is the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine.
