Old Passports still accepted for entry in the EU

November 8, 2004.

*** Ukrainian media recently have carried stories on alleged plans of the European Union to forbid entry into the EU as of January 1, 2005 for Ukrainian citizens who do not carry “new” passports.

The Delegation of the European Commission to Ukraine wishes to make it clear that neither the European Commission nor any of the EU member states have made such proposals

The European Commission welcomes the introduction of a new generation of passports, more in line with international security standards, but stresses that EU Member States will continue to accept “old” passports.

The decision as to the continued validity of “old” passports is entirely up to the Ukrainian authorities.
