New website “Youth Chooses. Youth Acts”

April 6, 2006.

    www.citizen.org.ua
A new website has been developed by the Civic Education Ukraine project, a project funded by the European Union, to collect and disseminate good practice in civic education and civic upbringing through extra-curricular activities.Secondary school pupils and their teachers can use the website to find recommendations on teaching methodology, concrete ideas on how to organize their own activities in different areas of civic upbringing or how to participate in several All-Ukrainian projects, where they can get information and exchange experiences. The target groups include teachers at secondary schools, institutions involved in extra-curricular activities, and other adults, involved in the youth upbringing, as well as pupils aged 13-17.
The website has the following sections:: “Youth SELF-GOVERNS” (school and local self-governance), “Youth CARES” (environmental protection), “Youth PROTECTS rights and freedoms” (legal education, pupils’ monitoring projects), “Youth CHOOSES” (all about elections), “Youth REMEMBERS” (research into historical heritage, conservation of national traditions , protection of monuments, establishment of museum exhibitions), “Youth in DIVERSE SOCIETY (tolerance camps, establishment of museums and study of history of multicultural communities), “Youth WANTS to STAY HEALTHY” (promotion of a healthy lifestyle, educational campaigns on the dangers of smoking and alcohol etc), “Youth HELPS” (volunteer work with vulnerable social groups, social work), “Youth GOES to Europe and world” (friendship of schools in different regions, culture projects, co-operation with the schools from other countries etc.), “Youth WANTS TO BE HEARD” (school and interschool newspapers, co-operation with local media, establishment of school TV stations, radio, social advertisements etc.)
It is expected that active participation by groups of pupils in the projects will lead to their active participation in the e-forum, which will be established on the website. It is also planned to include European best practice and experience in this field and promote the dissemination of the practical experience of teachers in Ukraine.
