Jeroen Dijsselbloem elected as new president of Eurogroup

January 23, 2013.

On 21 January the Eurogroup – the informal gathering of the Finance Ministers of the Member States who share the single currency, the euro – appointed Jeroen Dijsselbloem as its president for a term of two and a half years.

Dijsselbloem is Finance Minister of The Netherlands, and will retain his post whilst chairing the Eurogroup.

He succeeds Jean-Claude Juncker, who has chaired the Eurogroup since 1 January 2005.

The European Council President Herman Van Rompuy congratulated Dijsselbloem on his election as a president of the Eurogroup. “After having met the Dutch Minister of Finance on 7 January this year, I am confident that he is the right choice and I wish him every success in his work and look forward to cooperating closely with him”, Van Rompuy stressed.

He also expressed his gratitude to the outgoing president of the Eurogroup. “He is the most experienced of us all. Jean-Claude Juncker deserves our gratitude”, Van Rompuy said.
