State Border Guard Service of Ukraine integrates EU standards of border management

On 20 September, the opening ceremony of the new Twinning project took place at the headquarters of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine to improve border management in line with the EU practices. The EU-funded Twinning project, Support to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine in further development IBM approaches for travel document verification and stolen motor vehicles detection, will assist its beneficiary in enhancing the mechanism of prevention of illegal migration and combating crime in Ukraine.
Martin Klaucke, head of operations section Good Governance and Democratisation at the EU Delegation to Ukraine, notes that this is the first ever EU Twinning project on border management in Ukraine: This project will facilitate implementation of the new border management strategy.
He says that the EU has already provided to Ukraine substantial contributions in this sphere since 2013, including E60 million budget support for integrated border management, E10 million for vehicles and equipment, and maintaining regional capacity building via EUBAM project in Odesa. “The EU is looking forward to results-oriented and dynamic project, which will also involve the main stakeholders, such as State Customs Service and State Migration Service," says Martin Klaucke.
The Twinning project aims to improve the operational capacity of the State Border Guard Service, assist in establishing integrated border security management system in line with the EU standards, models and the best practices.
