Europe Day in Ukraine

May 14, 2017.

Europe Day is a symbol of successful model of peaceful cooperation between nations based on shared values and interests.
The decision to celebrate Europe Day on May 9 was adopted at the Summit of the European Council in Milan in 1985. However, until 1997, this holiday was mainly cultural and artistic event.
Between 1997 and 1998, the candidates for accession to the EU joined the celebration of Europe Day. For those countries, the celebration has acquired a certain political overtones and was aimed at shaping positive public opinion regarding accession to the European Union. The celebration included variety of activities such as regional conferences and round tables, appearances of public figures in mass media followed by public debates, broad public awareness campaign as well as cultural and sport events, etc
Regarding Ukraine, it is the only non-EU country which celebrates Europe Day at the national level along with two EU candidate countries - Macedonia and Turkey.
Formalized by the Presidential Decree 339 of April 19, 2003, the Ukrainian celebration of Europe Day takes place on the third Saturday of May.
Traditionally, the opening ceremony is held in Khreshchatyk Street where "European Village" is established containing tents for EU member states, international organizations as well as for Ukrainian representatives. A variety of activities held on this day includes concerts, public debates with the Ukrainian politicians and the EU ambassadors, quizzes on European topics, etc. Moreover, the European cosine is represented in a so-called Food Corner where the participants can taste culinary delights from all over the continent.
Nevertheless, the Ukrainian capital is not the only city celebrating Europe Day. Large-scale celebrations are also held in different regions of Ukraine.
