PILOT OBLAST WORKSHOP

A Project workshop, organised by Cambridge Education and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, was held on 6 October in Kyiv.
13 representatives from In-service teacher Training Institutes (ITTIs) and Education Departments (EDs) from the project’s pilot oblasts of Kherson, Kyiv City, Vinnytsia and Volyn attended.
The Ministry of Education was represented by Mrs Raisa Yevtushenko, Chief Specialist, Department of Secondary and Pre-School Education.
The Cambridge Education consultancy team was represented by David Royle (International Team Leader), Tetyana Ladychenko (National Teacher Training Expert), Svetlana Poznyak (National Curriculum Development Expert) and Polina Verbytska (National Community Development and Extra-curricular Activities Expert).
The three main aims of the workshop were: (1) to brief the pilot oblasts on the main objectives of the project; (2) to discuss the effective implementation of the objectives and the roles of the ITTIs and EDs; (3) to agree an action plan and the appointment of a project liaison person from each oblast/ITTI.
The national experts each made presentations on the specific project objectives and activities relevant to curriculum development, teacher training and community development and extra-curricular activities.
Oblast representatives also presented their experiences i! n delive ring civic education and discussion took place in particular on the Project’s plans to develop: (1) a new 72-hour certified teacher training course in Civic Education and ‘Individual and the World’ for history, law, social sciences and languages teachers; (2) a new 8-hour course for all other teachers in cross-curricular approaches to civic education; (3) a pre-service training course for Civic Education teachers; (4) Civic Education resource centres and (5) mini-projects involving schools and youth NGOs as art of the extra-curricular activities component.
The workshop will be followed up by regional workshops with directors of the 20 schools already selected in each of the pilot oblasts to introduce the project and discuss implementation plans.
The rectors of each ITTI will be asked to nominate a project liaison person to assist with the planning and implementation of project activities.
