EU Imposes New Sanctions Over the Abduction and “Re-Education” of Ukrainian Children

    In May 2026, the European Union imposed sanctions on 16 individuals and 7 entities involved in the unlawful deportation, forced assimilation, and militarized “re-education” of Ukrainian children.
    
    Those sanctioned include government officials, camp administrators, educational personnel, and military-patriotic organizations that participated in altering children’s identities, imposing Russian citizenship, facilitating adoptions within Russia, or preparing children for service in support of Russian interests.
    
    According to international estimates, approximately 20,500 Ukrainian children have been unlawfully deported or forcibly transferred to Russia or Russian-occupied territories.
    
    The sanctions form part of a broader international effort supporting Ukraine’s initiative to return these children home and assisting human rights organizations documenting these crimes for future legal proceedings.
