Ukraine’s Supreme Court Upholds a Landmark Ruling Concerning a Same-Sex Couple

June 19, 2026.

In 2026, human rights organizations highlighted a significant decision by the Supreme Court of Ukraine, which upheld a lower court ruling recognizing the existence of a de facto family relationship between two men.

The case is particularly important in the context of the ongoing war, as partnership rights directly affect issues such as military service, medical decision-making, inheritance, the right to accompany a partner, access information in hospitals, and obtain social benefits and legal protections.

Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International described the ruling as an important step forward for the rights of LGBTI people in Ukraine. At the same time, comprehensive legislation regulating civil partnerships remains unfinished. Ukraine’s European integration roadmap предусматривает continued progress toward stronger anti-discrimination legislation and the establishment of a clear legal framework for civil partnerships.
