The Investigation into Viktoriia Roshchyna’s Case Has Become a Symbol of the Struggle for Press Freedom

    In April 2026, the international journalistic community once again drew attention to the case of Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna, who disappeared while working in Russian-occupied territories and later died in Russian detention. Organizations including Forbidden Stories, The Guardian, The Washington Post, and other media partners continued the work she had begun by investigating Russia’s system of unlawful detention facilities for Ukrainians.
    
    This story is important for civil society for two key reasons. First, it demonstrates the price of independent journalism during wartime. Second, it highlights how international cooperation among journalists can serve as a form of protection: when one reporter is silenced, dozens of colleagues continue the investigation.
    
    Such collaborative investigations help build the evidentiary foundation for sanctions, criminal prosecutions, and increased international pressure on Russia.
